You know when everyone says that grade 11 is harder than matric? Yeah they lied. This year has been HECTIC. And now with prelims just around the corner, its about to get a whole lot busier. Everyone keeps saying that I should enjoy the time I have left, and 'real' problems only start once we are done with matric but I cannot wait to be done. Now I'm not saying university is going to be a breeze, or that life in general will be filled with unicorns and rainbows, however I am just so ready for a change. And the way I look at it, the further I get and harder I work, I am one step closer to going to London. But I won't lie it is hard. I think the most important thing is discipline and time management, which I suck at. Luckily I have a few methods that help me with keeping on top of things. If you are always looking for motivation, you will never find it. The real secret to success is to sit down and work. It's called self-discipline. I know it isn't always that easy, trust me, I know. However, when I look over to my walls and see the goals I have written for myself I find it a little bit easier. I know though that it is hard to work when your tiered, or have a million other things to do. That's why time management is so important. The Ivy Lee method is a simple but super helpful method to help with time management.
At the end of your workday, write down six tasks you want to achieve for the next day. Do not write down more than six.
Prioritize those 6 tasks, ordering them from most important to least
When you come to work tomorrow, only focus on the first task. Do not work on anything else until you’ve finished it.
Then move to the second task, finish it, and so on. Move any unfinished tasks to a list of six new tasks for tomorrow.
Repeat this process every day you work.
Another important tip to make sure you don't burn out, is to stick to your timetable. I don't do weekly schedules though, because I find plans change very quickly and if I don't stick to the schedule I start freaking out. Personally I take five minutes every day to work out a rough time table, I work for 1-2 hours, and then a 10 minute break. It is important to take the break even if you didn't finish the work you planned to. To all my matric students out there, just remember we only have a few months left until we are finally DONE with high school! Just keep the good work up and the prelims and finals will be done before we know it!
